Prof. dr. Jochen Monstadt

Jochen Monstadt holds the Chair for Governance of Urban Transitions and Dynamics at the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University. His research interests are at the interface of urban studies and social studies of technology. He has conducted and coordinated extensive research on the urban governance of socio-ecological and socio-technical change in the global North and South. His current research projects and interests involve:

  • the governance of urban and infrastructural vulnerability and resilience;
  • urban and infrastructural transitions in East Africa and;
  • the development of smart cities and energy grids in Europe.

He has broad expertise in spatial planning, in particular on the relation between infrastructure and planning. Examples include energy transition, smart grids and water infrastructure. Jochen Monstadt teaches in core courses as well as in electives on Urban Infrastructures in the Master’s curriculum.
