Career prospects
During the Master’s programme, you will be challenged to determine which career perspective best fits your talents and interests. We will guide and support you to focus your programme on obtaining all the skills required for a certain career path.
Academic career
A number of our graduates continue on to PhD studies. Utrecht University provides ample opportunities for PhD research. However, there are also excellent opportunities to perform your PhD research elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad.
Non-academic careers
Our graduates are highly qualified for research and management positions in an applied environment.
Innovative companies with knowledge-intensive products are a key job market for our students. However, there are also opportunities for management positions in consultancy firms, government organizations, and other institutions. Graduates are working at:
- Consultancy firms (Accenture, IQVIA, Boston Consulting Group, PwC, Deloitte, Avertim, Ttopstart, KPMG, Bluebricks, Catalyze, EY, Bluefield, Boston Consulting Group);
- Financial institutions ABN AMRO, Rabobank, van Lanschot Kempen, Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij);
- Governmental organisations (Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry VWS, GGD, TNO, EMA);
- Chemical and pharmaceutical companies (Roche, AkzoNobel, DSM, AbbVie, Johnson & Johnson, Astra Zeneca, Sanofi, Amgen, MSD);
- Fast moving Consumer Goods companies (L’Oréal, Unilever, Procter and Gamble, Nestle, Danone, Ahold Delhaize);
- Renewable technology/ Energy transition (FME Hydrogen, Windunie, Hyet Group)
- Hospitals (Diakonessenhuis, Dutch Cancer Center, Amsterdam Medical Center)
Graduates of this programme have also started their own companies.
Career Services
UU Career Services offers training related to career orientation and job application skills; examples include writing an application letter and CV and conducting a job interview. Career Day
Once a year Utrecht University organises a Career Day. The Career Day offers the opportunity to sign up for workshops and trainings, and to meet recruiters at the careers fair. It’s also possible to join a job application training or have your resume checked.
Bring your knowledge to life in the classroom!
Do you want to inspire young people and do something that truly matters? Become a teacher by completing the one-year Leraar voorbereidend hoger onderwijs (LVHO) after your Master’s degree. You’ll be qualified to teach in all levels of secondary education (vmbo/havo/vwo), mbo and adult education. Please note that the programme is in Dutch.

During the LVHO programme, you’ll learn how to explain complex topics in a simple way, challenge students to think critically, and create an inspiring learning environment. With practical experience and didactic training, you’ll develop the skills to convey knowledge in a lively and accessible manner.
Hybrid teaching
Want to combine teaching with another job? You can! As a hybrid teacher, you might work in the corporate sector as well as in the classroom. This way, you will help students understand the theory but also show them how things work in practice. It keeps your work dynamic and varied.
