This page outlines the step-by-step process for completing your application to a Master's programme at Utrecht University. Please read this information thoroughly before starting your application.
Competencies
This is a selective Master's. You will be considered for admission to the Master's programme Media, Art and Performance Studies if you have a Bachelor’s diploma in Humanities from a Dutch or international university and can demonstrate the following knowledge, insight and skills:
- You have a clear interest in Media, Art and Performance Studies as shown by having taken at least 45 EC worth of courses within these fields on Bachelor's level.
- You have demonstrable knowledge of the main types of (current) research issues and methods in the field of Media, Art and/or Performance Studies.
- You have knowledge, insight and skills that are required for designing and carrying out research; these you must be able to demonstrate through references and/or grades that are above average, or equivalent thereof.
- You are able to express yourself in proficient English, both orally and in written text, as demonstrated in a writing sample, a motivation letter and an admission interview;
- You have a strong motivation for carrying out scientific research and ambition to follow a programme to become a starting scientific researcher; this must be demonstrated clearly in your motivation letter and an admission interview.
Selection procedure
The Admissions Committee decides on your application. The committee will assess whether you will be able to succesfully complete the Master’s programme within the nominal duration. The committee takes into account:
- Motivation and talent.
- Level of required knowledge and the mastery of methods and techniques used in the subject area.
- General high level of professional and intellectual ability.
- Command of the language(s) used in the programme.
The Admissions Committee bases their decision in part on the documents you have submitted for your application. In addition, an interview is part of the selection procedure.
Once your application is complete and we have received all the supporting documents, we will invite you for an admission interview. This interview will take place in Utrecht, but if necessary other options such as Skype will be considered.

- Media en cultuur/Media and Culture
- Kunstgeschiedenis
- Filosofie
- Communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen
- Taal- en cultuurstudies with a relevant major (hoofdrichting) such as Film and Television Studies, Art, History and Culture, New Media and Digital Culture, or a specialisation in theatre and dance.
- Liberal Arts and Sciences with a relevant major (hoofdrichting) such as Film and Television Studies, Art, History and Culture, New Media and Digital Culture, or a specialisation in theatre and dance.
- University College Utrecht, with a Media & Performance or Art History & Museum Studies track
Are you currently enrolled in a different Bachelor’s programme and are you thinking about applying for this Master’s programme, please contact the Programme Coordinator for more information. By planning your studies carefully and by taking the appropriate courses, you may be admissible.
The research Master in Media, Art and Performance Studies does not offer a Pre-Master’s programme.

Visit Studielink and complete the registration process. You can find all information on how to use Studielink here. After completing your Studielink application, you will receive login details for OSIRIS Online Application within 2 working days.
Apply via StudielinkAfter submitting your application to Studielink, you will receive an email with login details for OSIRIS Online Application. Here you can upload all required documents, check the status of your application and enter contact details of your referee(s).
After you upload all documents in OSIRIS, the Graduate School will evaluate them. We strive to inform you of our decision within 20 working days.
