Our programme provides connections to an extensive network of national and international contacts and organisations within and outside academia, thus guaranteeing a variety of professional opportunities to our students.
After graduation, you will be a gender expert with an ever-growing field of work awaiting you. Graduates can find employment in international (non-profit) organisations and institutions that pay attention to gender and ethnicity, such as:
- national and international archives, documentation centres, and platforms (Atria, IHLIA, ATGENDER)
- women’s associations (Mama Cash, Women on Waves, European Women’s Lobby, WO=MEN)
- organisations relating to migration and refugees (Pharos, Zami, Tiye International)
- governmental organisations (ministries related to cultural affairs, education, and equality)
- arts & media sector (national/regional newspapers, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, exhibitions such as Yes Naturally)
- institutions that promote expertise in the field of gender, diversity, policy and culture (Atria, Movisie)

Academic careers
While the Master in Gender Studies (Research) is profiled more clearly toward an academic career in gender studies, the Gender Studies programme can also lead to a research-driven career.

Mentors
Throughout the year you will have your own personal mentor who supervises your progress in the programme and with whom you can discuss your academic development and future professional perspectives.
MA1 Seminar
In every study period, you will come together in an extra-curricular seminar with your fellow students and the Programme Coordinator, in order to discuss and prepare for the coming steps in the programme, your internships, development of professional practices, and future plans after graduation. In one of these sessions, you will also have the possibility to encounter Gender Studies alumni who will discuss their experiences during and after their studies in the Graduate Gender Programme at Utrecht University.
Career Services
Career Services offers events, tests, coaching and training in and outside your Master's programme, related to professional self-analysis, career orientation and job application skills. You can find more information about career services on Career Services.
Other career events
- Your Perspective is a monthly career orientation meeting for students and alumni of the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University.
- The Faculty of Humanities organises a Career Night Humanities with interesting partners who will illustrate the diversity in career opportunities for humanities graduates.
- Once a year Utrecht University organises a Career Day. This Career Day offers the opportunity to sign up for workshops and trainings, and to meet recruiters at the careers fair.
