Degree from a Dutch university of applied sciences (HBO)
This page outlines the step-by-step process for completing your application to a Master's programme at Utrecht University. Please read this information thoroughly before starting your application.
This is a selective Master's programme. To be considered for admission, you need:
- a sufficient Bachelor's degree.
For students from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences it is required to have an average grade of at least 7/10 for the core courses next to the mentioned skills and knowledge below.
Bachelor’s programmes that most likely meet the requirements are:- Hogere Informatica Opleiding (HIO); and
- (Technical) Computer Science.
- general Computer Science solid knowledge and skills, including:
- computer science and logic;
- the ability to analyze and model computer science problems; and
- the ability to communicate facts and findings verbally and in writing.
- the following basic knowledge and basic skills, specifically for the programme:
- the ability to make a computer programme of reasonable complexity and size, in an object-oriented programming language such as Java, C++, C# or Rust;
- data structures, algorithms and related concepts of reasonable complexity, such as sorting algorithms, O(..)-notation, balanced binary search trees, etc.;
- mathematics, notably calculus, logic, linear algebra, probability and statistics; and
- computer-graphics and computer-vision techniques.
- a strong motivation plus knowledge, skills, and competences through your CV, course grades and motivation.
If you do not meet all requirements
- You must follow one or two deficiency courses (7.5-15 EC) which replaces a secondary elective course; or
- If you do meet the admission requirements above, but you have substantial deficiencies, you can be considered for a tailored 30 EC pre-Master’s programme to be followed before the start of the Master’s programme. You need to have a Dutch educational background to follow the Pre-Master's programme. Note: The pre-Master’s programme is not available for international students.
English language requirements
You are exempt from the English language requirement because you obtained your previous degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences.
Selection procedure
The Admissions Committee reviews all requests for admission and selects students that meet the entry requirements. In some cases you may be obliged to first complete a Pre-Master’s programme. The Admissions Committee also assesses whether or not you will be able to successfully complete the Master’s programme within the set time frame.

All deadlines expire at 23:59 [Central European Time] on the specified date. You must complete the application process (including submitting your application documents in OSIRIS Online Application and paying the application fee) by this time.
The following documents must be uploaded before the application deadline:
Diploma or certified graduation statement (with graduation date and without any conditions)
Certified transcript (including courses, grades and GPA)
Please make sure the document has a stamp/signature and contact information of the institute.
Visit Studielink and complete the registration process. You can find all information on how to use Studielink here. After completing your Studielink application, you will receive login details for OSIRIS online application within 2 working days.
Apply via StudielinkAfter submitting your application to Studielink, you will receive an email with login details for OSIRIS Online Application. Here you can upload all required documents and check the status of your application.
After you upload all documents in OSIRIS, the Graduate School will evaluate them. We strive to inform you of our decision within 20 working days.
