Yes, you are eligible as long as you have followed 30 EC of courses in Film Studies, Television Studies, Media Studies (or related fields such as Cultural Studies) during your studies.

In the application you are asked to list the ‘relevant courses’ related to the content of this MA that you have followed. You can use this section to explain how the courses you have followed count as relevant courses according to you (for example because of the subjects they had, or the authors that they worked with, or another reason).

If you have not followed 30 EC of relevant courses, it might be possible to do a Pre-Master’s Degree, which is available for students who are residing in the Netherlands. In order to apply for a Pre-Master’s Programme, you must apply for the Master’s Programme, so that the coordinator can assess your application and see what kind of Pre-Master’s Programme would be right for you. Please, indicate in your motivation letter, that you would like to apply for the Pre-Master’s Programme.

We unfortunately cannot do any pre-assessments of personal cases, as this would be unfair to the rest of the procedure.

A  reference letter is not required for the application process but we do ask you to write a potential MA thesis project as writing assignment. You will find the guidelines on our website under Application and admission when you follow the route designated for your particular background.

A Pre-Master's Programme is available for students who already reside in the Netherlands, do not need housing, and do not have or require a residence permit for study purposes. In order to apply for a Pre-Master’s Programme, you must apply for the Master’s Programme, so that the coordinators can assess your application and see what kind of Pre-Master’s Programme would be right for you. Please, indicate in your motivation letter, that you would like to apply for the Pre-Master’s Programme. 

Yes, you are still eligible. Feel free to use the motivation letter to explain what you have been doing since you have obtained your BA, if you would like!

Yes. The general rule is the following: you can apply, but you must have finished your BA degree by the time the Master’s Degree starts. 

Yes, the programme is open to people who already hold a Master’s Degree.

If you have a Dutch University of Applied Sciences’ (HBO) Degree and show enough motivation and talent, it might be possible for you to do a Pre-Master’s Degree in preparation for the Master’s Degree. This degree is available for students residing in the Netherlands. In order to apply for a Pre-Master’s Programme, you must apply for the Master’s Programme, so that the coordinators can assess your application and see what kind of Pre-Master’s Programme would be right for you.

Possibly. If that is the case, we encourage you to elaborate on this matter in your motivation letter – there may be a good reason why your grades are what they are. On the bright side, your grades are not the only criterion we take into account in the admission process. In any case, we always look at the combination of grades, experience, motivation, and writing sample. That is also why we do not specify a minimum average or GPA as a requirement for application.

Yes, definitely. You will be taught by internationally recognized scholars and benefit from close connections with research groups and events. Research and practice are complementary in our educational approach.

You can find the study schedule in terms of the curriculum here. In terms of specific days and times, this sort of schedule only becomes available for registered student a couple of weeks beforehand, so we cannot predict that in advance. 

Typically, students who follow the MA part-time complete the MA in two years and keep to the following schedule: In year 1, they follow 2 courses per block in the first semester (4 courses total), and do their  internship or thesis in the second semester. In year 2, they follow the remainder of the courses in the first semester (2 courses total), and do their internship or thesis in the second semester.

The curriculum of a Pre-Master’s Degree consists of 8 courses of 7.5 ECTS each from the BA in Media and Culture, (counting up to 60 ECTS worth of courses). These courses range from first year introduction courses to specialization course in Film and Television studies and include academic skills classes and an BA thesis. They are spread over the span of a year.

No, the programme only starts in September.

Within a one-year MA it is not possible to go abroad for a period or semester to take courses at another university. However, it is possible to do your internship abroad. 

You are exempt from the English language requirements for EMI-experienced Master’s programmes if you hold a fully English-taught Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a country in the European Union or one of the following: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, Cameroon (English speaking), Canada (French-speaking and English-speaking), Curaçao, Dominica, Falklands, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guyana, Iceland, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, St. Maarten (Dutch part only), Suriname, Swaziland, Switzerland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia or Zimbabwe.

The Master’s Degree in Film and Television Cultures Studies is taught on-campus.
