This page outlines the step-by-step process for completing your application to a Master's programme at Utrecht University. Please read this information thoroughly before starting your application.
Students that complete the Schakelzone Recht for the LLM programmes of the Open Universiteit are also eligible for admission to our LLM programmes. Beside the completion of the Schakelzone Recht, you have to meet the entrance requirements of your Master's programme.
Admission requirements
As part of your application to the programme, you have to submit a motivation letter that outlines your motivation for this particular Master’s programme and your future ambitions. Students that have completed a Bachelor’s degree at Utrecht University or another Dutch research university, The Hague University of Applied Sciences or Schakelzone Recht are supposed to be proficient in English at the required level and do not have to submit additional proof of English proficiency.
In the admission procedure it will be furthermore determined whether you possess, to a sufficient extent, the following core competences.
- motivation and talent;
- a sufficient level of the relevant knowledge and a command of the methods and techniques in that field of study;
- a general academic level of working and thinking;
- command of the language(s) used in the course.
An interview can be part of the selection procedure. The admissions committee will make its final decision based on your ability, your commitment to the subject, your academic skills and your command of English.
English language requirements
You are exempt from the English language requirement because you obtained your previous degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences.
Yes there is.
Schakelzone Recht is a programme of the Open University (OU). Students with a University of Applied Sciences Law degree who have completed the Schakelzone Recht can apply for admission to the Master's programme. Additional requirements may apply for Civil Effect. The entry requirements for the Master's programme must also be met. After completing the Schakelzone Recht, you can apply for one of the following Master's programmes:
- Business and Law (Dutch programme) for which adequate prior knowledge of Insolvency Law is an additional entrance requirement;
- Dutch Law, programme Labour Law (in Dutch);
- Dutch Law, programme Intellectual Property Law, Innovation and Technology;
- Dutch Law, programme Private Law; for which adequate prior knowledge of Insolvency Law is an additional entrance requirement;
- Dutch Law, programme Constitutional and Administrative Law;
- Dutch Law, programme Criminal Law;
- European Criminal Justice in a Global Context;
- European Law;
- Law and Economics;
- Law and Sustainability in Europe;
- Law and Technology in Europe;
- Public International Law.
Students that have completed the International and European Law LLB degree of the Hague University of Applied Sciences are eligible for admission to the following programmes in international and European law of Utrecht University:
- European Criminal Justice in a Global Context;
- European Law;
- Law and Economics;
- Law and Sustainability in Europe;
- Law and Technology in Europe;
- Public International Law;
There is no premaster programme in law available for candidates with the International and European Law Bachelor’s degree in applied sciences. We accept candidates with this LLB degree that have a minimum average grade of 7/10. A selection interview can be part of the admission procedure. You have to apply through Studielink as if you have an academic Bachelor’s degree in law, even though you have a degree in applied sciences, and upload the required documents.

All deadlines expire at 23:59 [CET/CEST] on the specified date. You must complete the application process (including submitting your application documents in OSIRIS Online Application and paying the application fee) by this time.
The following documents must be uploaded before the application deadline:
Diploma or certified graduation statement (with graduation date and without any conditions)
Certified transcript (including courses, grades and GPA)
Please make sure the document has a stamp/signature and contact information of the institute.

Apply via StudielinkAfter submitting your application to Studielink, you will receive an email with login details for OSIRIS Online Application. Here you can upload all required documents, check the status of your application and enter contact details of your referee(s).
