UU-NIOZ Early Career Scientist Symposium (UNECSS) 2025
The UNECSS 2025 symposium will take place on October 9-10 in Egmond aan Zee, bringing together PhD candidates and Postdocs from UU and NIOZ to explore the intersection of scientific research and public engagement.
This year’s theme explores how “hot topics” from media and global discourse shape scientific conversations. Our goal is to equip early-career scientists with practical tools and skills to effectively communicate their research to a wide range of audiences—including the public, journalists, and policy makers.
Participants will have the opportunity to take part in one of several interactive workshops, including:
- Graphic Design in Figures
Learn the basics of color theory, composition, graph types & information density, and apply them directly to a current research project in a hands-on session. - Communicating Your Science in the News
Discover how to work with journalists, craft compelling messages, and navigate interviews to make your science newsworthy and accessible. - The Power of Citizen Science
Explore how involving the public in data collection and research can expand the reach and impact of your work.
In addition, we have invited guest speakers from a wide range of ocean-related disciplines to share their experiences. They will discuss their cutting-edge research and how they have gone beyond traditional academic channels to make their science heard.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Dr. René van Westen (UU/ KNMI) - Climate impacts under an AMOC tipping event
- Dr. William Beckerson (UU) - Molecular genetic work on zombie ants
- Prof. Laura Villanueva (UU/NIOZ) - Diversity, metabolism, and evolution of marine microbes and their contribution to biogeochemical cycles
We look forward to welcoming you to a vibrant and inspiring event that will empower the next generation of scientists to engage more deeply with the world.
