Universality in enumerative geometry and Vafa-Witten theory

In my thesis, I consider two counting problems.

In the first case, I count certain geometric objects, namely curves with simple self intersections, and solve a classical problem from 19th century mathematics.

The second problem is a 'modern' geometric problem, and counts solutions to certain equations from string theory. Here, I mathematically test a physics theory from the 1990's.
