Two events with Rita Segato on gender: coloniality, feminicide, and power
Rita Segato in Utrecht | 8-9 June
The In/Equality Platform, together with the Netherlands Research School of Gender Studies (NOG) and the Graduate Gender Programme at UU (GGeP), will organise two events featuring Rita Segato. Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Bioethics at the University of Brasília, Segato is one of the leading international voices on gendered violence, coloniality, and power, whose work has been widely read and debated across Latin America and Europe. We warmly invite you to join us!
Event 1 - Doing Gender Lecture
Gender and Coloniality: From Communitarian to Colonial Modern Patriarchy
In this lecture, Segato argues that contemporary violence cannot be understood without looking at how colonialism transformed (and intensified) existing gender hierarchies. Central to her talk is the distinction between more diffuse, community-based forms of patriarchy and the more rigid, high-intensity form that emerged with colonial modernity.
- Monday 8 June 2026, 17:15-19:00
- Janskerkhof 2-3, room 0.13, Utrecht

Amongst other things, it will cover what Segato's ideas help us understand about violence today, including feminicide and antifeminist backlash, as well as how patriarchy is being strengthened under (global) inequality.
