In this open dialogue, John A. Douglass, UC Berkeley, will reflect on recent developments in U.S. higher education in light of his broader research on neo-nationalism, autocracy, and illiberal democracies—forces that increasingly shape higher education globally, including in Europe and the Netherlands.

Dr. John A. Douglass wrote an alarming preview in late 2024 of what the impact of a new Trump administration on US higher education could be. Once the new administration in office, the situation for US universities proofs to be even more severe.

Douglass will discuss these developments in the context of his ongoing work on autocrats and illiberal democracies; trends that endanger academic freedom and institutional autonomy of universities in various parts of the world, including Europe and now also the USA.

This session, convened by prof.dr. Marijk van der Wende, will be an open dialogue adressing participants’ questions and the lessons to be learned for higher education in Europe and the Netherlands.
