Symposium Youth in the digital society

groep tieners op de bank met mobiele telefoons

Digitization of society has a major impact on the development and well-being of children and youngsters. In many ways it affects not only children and young people, but also their parents and educators. During the symposium 'Youth in the digital society' Utrecht researchers from all faculties will try to bring focus and generate scientific and interdisciplinary mass around this versatile research topic.

Youth and digitization has become part of both national and international research agendas, such as the Digital Society Research agenda of the Dutch research universities (VSNU), several routes in the Dutch National Research Agenda, the EU strategy within Horizon Europe and the UN development goals.

José van Dijck, professor in (social) media studies, will give an introductory lecture. This will be followed by an interactive morning with various workshops in which scholars from different disciplines meet and come up with innovative projects, preferably linked to one of the themes of Dynamics of Youth

Topics in Youth in the Digital Society include, but are not restricted to:

  • Digital balance between on- and off-line environments
  • Digital learning in formal and informal environments
  • Digital rights
  • Addiction and intervention
  • Data ethics
  • Digital (in)equality
  • Media (il)literacy

More details on the programme will follow soon.

Attending the symposium is free of charge, however we would like you to register for catering reasons: Petra van Dijk, p.m.vandijk@uu.nl.
