Steps towards CEL: An introduction to Community Engaged Learning in a BA curriculum

Language: Dutch
Work form: Inspiration session, teacher talk
Collaborating on societal issues with external partners brings significant benefits for students, teachers, and partners. This is promoted through Community-engaged learning (CEL): a form of education in which students work together with partners on societal issues. Throughout Utrecht University (UU), inspiring courses are being designed that are fully structured around CEL. Another way to promote the goals of CEL is to integrate it throughout the entire curriculum.
This session provides a hands-on example of such a curriculum enhancement: it will outline how CEL elements are integrated into the curriculum of the Bachelor’s in Art History, so that students engage with CEL throughout their entire BA program via a learning pathway. Topics that will be covered include:
- What principles did the BA coordinators start with for this project?
- Where in the curriculum are CEL elements integrated?
- How are existing assignments adapted, and with what learning objectives and assessments?
- A closer look at one or two revised assignments
- What challenges do the teachers face, and what are the first experiences with this recently started revision?
