Staff Symposium Student Wellbeing
It might sound familiar; a situation wherein you notice a student who is feeling uncomfortable. Perhaps the student is not keeping up with the group, lacks motivation or seems to be under a lot of stress. Maybe the student came to you for help, or you want to talk with the student. But how?
On 15 April, questions like these will be addressed at the Staff Symposium Student Wellbeing. We will share knowledge and provide practical tools for student supervisors, teachers and other colleagues who have contact with students. Employees interested in the topic or involved in it in another way are welcome too.
By means of various inspiring speakers and relevant workshops, we will discuss student wellbeing with each other and students. Because it concerns us all. As employees, we can make a positive contribution to it - if only by setting a good example to the next generation we train at our institution. This day also focusses on your own well-being, because how you are doing as an employee is very important as well.
Do you have questions about employee vitality offerings, upcoming workshops and meetings, or do you want to know what you can do about your own wellbeing? Step up to the UU Vitality team. There will be Vitality ambassadors present at the symposium.
The language of the plenary sections is Dutch and there is an option for English interpretation, during the workshop rounds there are English-language options.
It is possible as well to follow only part of the programme.

Key-note Professor Floortje Schepers: an ideal picture and how to get there
Prof. Dr. Floortje Scheepers is a professor of innovation associated with the GGZ and head of the medical, educational, and research department of psychiatry at UMC Utrecht. She will provide the first keynote of the day, where she will argue for a paradigm shift. She advocates moving away from labelling mental disorders, which she believes is an oversimplification of the complexities of human behaviour. Instead she proposes a more holistic approach that views students as complete individuals. Floortje emphasises the importance of alternative sources of recovery such as social contacts and peer support, alongside traditional treatment. She envisions an extensive, well-coordinated network of support options and will share this vision in her presentation.
Key-note Professor Gonneke Stevens: mental health of our (future) students
In the second keynote of the morning, Prof. Dr. Gonneke Stevens will discuss the most recent findings from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) and ‘Youth after Corona’ studies. These statistics, which focus on secondary school students, provide valuable insights into mental health of our future generation of students. She will also discuss some results from the National Student Wellbeing Monitoring among students in higher education. With these figures, she can make a translation to the societal context – what do they really mean? And what can we do?
This leads Gonneke directly into a panel discussion between herself, (experienced) students, student counsellors, and the Trimbos Institute for Mental Health.
Panel discussion: the story behind the numbers, and what now?
We conclude the morning with a panel discussion, where we delve into various issues surrounding youth wellbeing and translate these into the broader societal context. Our divers panel members will discuss the reality behind the numbers, the impact of the conversation about wellbeing, and the crucial role that various actors, from students and lecturers to society as a whole can play. We will explore what is going wrong, what improvements are possible, and what best practices exist to promote student wellbeing – in which employee wellbeing must not be forgotten. During the panel discussion, there is also room for questions from the audience. Please ask them, let’s have a conversation together.
