SIG Principles by Design lecture: Mapping Bias in Open Linked Data

SIG Principles by Design Lecture

Date(s) - 25-10-2021
12:00 - 13:00

Dr. Mirko Schaefer (MCW) will give a lecture about the inquiry of him and dr. Mel Chekol (Informatics department) into forms of bias in Wikipedia’s main knowledge repository Wikidata. Using descriptive statistics they identify skewed data which are caused by different forms of bias. This provides a representation not only of the cultural bias of Wikipedia contributors, but gives insight into how integrating information within the knowledge graph itself is causing bias. In conclusion Mirko argues for a practice of revisiting knowledge references through descriptive statistics in order to expose possible forms of bias and evaluate to what extent this bias might be problematic.
