Science Jam #62: Temporal Networks of Human Interactions
Thanks to the Young Complexity Researchers Utrecht (YCRU) group, they brought these popular sessions back to the CCSS for our researchers to discuss challenges in Complex Systems Studies. Everyone is welcome!
Therefore, we cordially invite you to the Science Jam #62 on Thursday 5 June (12:00-13:00) at the Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS) where you can:
Get a free gourmet lunch with the best sandwiches you can get at the Utrecht Science Park plus nice drinks;
Know one senior complexity researchers' work over one-hour lunch time;
Contribute your professional knowledge and experiences in a relaxing and informal setting;
Develop potential collaboration.
Leading complexity researcher: Prof. dr. Jari Saramäki, Department of Computer Science, Aalto University, Finland
Abstract:
Over the past decade or two, the increasing availability of large-scale digital traces has transformed our ability to study human behavior at scale. In this talk, I will reflect on our research into the structure and dynamics of social systems as captured by networks and processes that unfold on them. A central theme has been the development of the temporal networks framework—networks composed of interaction events instead of permanent links—to better capture the rhythms and patterns of human interaction. I will show how this approach has revealed new insights into human communication and behavior and the formation and maintenance of social ties. Drawing on data from mobile phone call records and other electronic sources, I will highlight results such as bursty patterns of interaction, correlations between network topology and interaction time series, and the stability of personal networks over time. I will also discuss some methodological challenges and opportunities that come with analyzing temporally resolved data.
Everyone is welcome and please feel free to invite your colleagues/friends/classmates/students to join us.
If you would like to have the lunch arrangement, please sign up before 15:00 Wednesday 4 June.
