[rescheduled] Climate Talks #1: the environmental impact of food production
This event will be rescheduled but the new date has not been determined yet. Keep an eye out on the UYA website for the new date.
Climate Talks is an initiative of the Utrecht Young Academy and TivoliVredenburg to discuss problems and solutions to the climate crisis with various guests and the public. Each edition highlights a certain aspect of the climate problem. The first edition will examine the environmental impact of food production.
These days, we cannot ignore climate change any longer and work on different sustainable solutions on a daily basis. Our food system is a major contributor to climate change: food production, especially meat, accounts for a large part of our CO2 emissions.
Our individual choices have a social, ethical and ecological impact, but higher powers also make important choices around food. What are solutions for sustainable food production? And why do we struggle to adopt greener habits?
The first edition on Climate & Food will take place on May 27. Three academics will discuss certain aspects of the food problem and reflect on this complex issue from their own discipline. Jonathan Doelman opens the night with an introduction on the connections between global food systems from a technical perspective. Denise de Ridder elaborates on the psychological dynamics behind changes in behaviour and food choices. Liesbeth van de Grift, member of the Utrecht Young Academy, concludes the evening with the historical background of Dutch agricultural policy and its current consequences.
