Presentation: Reciprocal fear of crime between citizens of the Republic of Türkiye and Syrians
Organised by the Willem Pompe Institute, Mehmet Demirbas will present his study on the Syrian population who were displaced due to the Syrian Civil War and came to Turkey through forced migration, as well as Turkish citizens. Over the past decade, Syrians residing in Turkey have become part of the demographic structure. Within this process, the mutual fear of crime between these two groups in the evolving societal life was examined. Accordingly, an analysis was conducted based on the groups' perceptions of risk of victimization and personal fear of crime. The research was limited to the provinces of Ankara, Istanbul, Kilis, and Mersin. Data collection methods included survey applications and face-to-face interviews. Surveys were conducted with a total of 1,500 participants, consisting of 753 Turkish and 747 Syrian individuals across the four provinces. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 Turkish and 20 Syrian participants to gain a better understanding of both groups. The risk perception scores of victimization and personal fear of crime scores for both groups were identified and compared.
