Pathways to Global Goals Symposium

On Friday May 25th from 9.00 to 13.00, Utrecht University & Gemeente Utrecht are holding a unique symposium at Seats2Meet Utrecht CS on the Sustainable Development Goals – 17 Global Goals for a better and more sustainable future set by the United Nations with governments and citizens from around the world. The symposium is organized together with the Sustainable Development Goals Coordinator for the Netherlands, Hugo von Meijenfeldt (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The event will bring together 150 students from Utrecht University with leading sustainability academics, city and national level policy makers, businesses and other practitioners working on or interested in the Global Goals to join in with the discussion.

The event is free, but space is limited. If you are interested in attending, please register here.

What will happen?

The ‘Pathways to the Global Goals’ symposium will take place at Seats2Meet Utrecht CS, Utrecht’s main hub for connecting people and knowledge in an open work environment. The symposium will have an open market place format, 150 students will present and engage in dialogues about original and carefully constructed pathways toward achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals. The best pathways will be voted on by all and presented at the end. After that, there is lunch and early ‘vrijmibo’ beers! During lunch, games focusing on sustainability will be available courtesy of students from a joint project by the Utrecht School of Arts (HKU) and Utrecht University.

Why come?

This event comes at a special time. Utrecht has been recognized as the most active city in the Netherlands in terms of its contributions to the Global Goals – the initiative Utrecht4GlobalGoals has mobilized a unique network of organizations working on the goals. At the same time, a new Bachelor’s programme at Utrecht University, Global Sustainability Science, has started, and is educating around 150 students per year on how to tackle sustainability challenges at all levels. There is a strong interest from all around the city to connect sustainability education to policy and action, and the Global Goals make for an excellent connection point. The event also aims to connect local sustainable development initiatives to global-level action: key insights from the symposium will be presented in New York to those in the United Nations working on the Sustainable Development goals globally.
