Outdoor Cinema Botanic Gardens: Onder het maaiveld

In honor of Utrecht University's anniversary, we open the gates of the Botanic Gardens for a series of special open-air movie nights. 

Find your spot among the plants, spread out your blanket and put on your headphones. This summer, the Botanic Gardens welcome you for four outdoor cinema evenings under the stars. Let yourself be surprised by an inspiring film where science, nature and imagination meet.

Film 9 September: Onder het maaiveld (Dutch)

The makers of De Nieuwe Wildernis and De Wilde Stad go underground. Directly beneath our feet lies a second world: a community of roots, fungi, worms, bacteria and arthropods in constant contact with one another. In just one teaspoon of healthy soil, there are more living organisms than there are people on earth. Onder het maaiveld brings this invisible world to light and raises an urgent question: how do we learn to treat the soil, the foundation of all life, with greater care?

With an introduction by Dr. ir. Janna Barel, lecturer at Utrecht University, researching the ecology of plant–soil interactions.
