On Wednesday, 6 November 2024, the Department of Law at the University of Cyprus and the Utrecht Centre for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law (UCWOSL) are launching the book The Regulatory Landscape of Ship Recycling – Justice, Environmental Principles, and the European Union as a Global Leader, authored by Dr. Ioanna Hadjiyianni (University of Cyprus) and Dr. Kleoniki Pouikli (Utrecht University). At this online event, the authors together with other experts in the field, will discuss the main findings and added value of the book, while also shedding light on recent developments in ship recycling that are likely to lead to further regulatory advancements in the future.

The book explores the regulatory complexities of ship recycling through the lenses of environmental principles, environmental justice and the EU’s role as a global climate/environmental leader. It further highlights tensions between globalization and the localization of ship recycling governance, environmental justice issues arising from circular economy initiatives at the EU level, and the interaction between state and non-state actors in a multi-level context.
