Movie screening: “Een vreemde wereld”.

Over the last decade, the Netherlands has incorporated a substantial number of asylum seekers. However, the integration process of refugees has proven challenging, raising important questions: what explains these integration outcomes? What can and should be expected from refugees, and what tools are needed to facilitate their integration?
Filmmaker Julia van Graevenitz followed two Syrian and two Eritrean refugees during their first year after receiving their asylum status: the transition out of the reception center, the struggle for family reunification, learning the Dutch language, entering the labor market and dealing with institutions and societal actors charged with managing their integration. What does their experience look like, and what can it teach us? This documentary engages with these questions.
The movie will be shown with English sub-titles and followed by a roundtable discussion with the following speakers:
