4 February – Lecture: Listening

Listening is a complicated activity that alternates and layers passive and active modalities, crosses over the senses, as well as operates in physical, perceptual, cognitive, psychological and social dimensions. Micha Hamel will give an overview of different theories of listening and invite students and further audiences to reflect on those theories.

11 February – Workshop: Musical listening

We will listen to live music and actively explore different listening modi and dispositions with the help of hybrid research tools like drawing, mapping and structured discussion. Next to that, we will check if and how the theories from the previous session can be applied to in the embodied experience. Bring your own instrument with you!

18 February – Debate: Societal listening

How could listening function as a skill to mobilize in striving for a healthy democracy? This session will build on insights that students acquired in the previous sessions, now shifting the focus from musical listening towards societal listening. Reading materials will be sent to the participants in advance.

All three sessions are from 18:30 to 20:30 in University College Utrecht Dining Hall Lounge.

The sessions are open for students and other interested audiences.
