Masterclass for PhD supervisors - How to touch on a problem: To signal, to communicate and to refer

As a supervisor you are in a perfect position to notice (personal) issues of your PhD candidates that might influence the PhD-trajectory. This might even worry you. During a series of masterclasses offered by the PhD psychologist of Utrecht University, we will offer you a way of managing a conversation about possible (personal) issues with your PhD candidates. Your daily practice experiences will be used.

15:00 Welcome and getting acquainted, your expectations and cases
15:20 How to signal: Development problems, Burn out, Depression, Performance  anxiety, Function Disabilities (theory and interactive discussion)
15:50 Short break (10 minutes)
16:00 How to communicate: Naming observable behavior (practicing)
16.20 How to refer: Bad news conversation (practicing and experiencing)
16:50 Take home messages

About the coaches

Drs. Paula Meesters is licensed psychologist. She works as PhD-psychologist at Utrecht University (team HR-Expertises). She teaches at the PhD Course Centre and advices Supervisory teams, PhD-mentors, HR Advisors, Corporate Social Work, Confidential Advisors. As licenced psychologist Paula supports the PhD candidates, providing both individual and group treatment. She is educated in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Short Term Therapy, Mindfulness Based Therapy, EMDR, ACT.

Dr. Inge van der Weijden is senior researcher, lecturer and PhD coordinator. She works at the Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at University of Leiden (https://www.cwts.nl/people/inge-van-der-weijden) and supervises PhD candidates. She is President of the Netherlands Centre of Expertise for Doctoral Education (http://www.phdcentre.eu).
