Abstract

A successful and innovative academic environment is most effectively achieved by diverse teams. Gendered data for academia typically lumps all STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) fields together masking the unique problems different fields may experience. This is particularly important for geoscience as international studies have shown that geoscience is one of the least diverse STEM disciplines. In this talk, I will present results from a project where we collected gendered data from the geoscience institutes of University of Aarhus and University of Copenhagen, and from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. We have mapped the current and past gender distribution among students, non-tenured, and tenured staff, and collected data on publication records, career trajectories, hires and funding applications. We find inequities across a range of parameters including publication metrics, hires and funding successes.
