On Tuesday 12 November, Thijs Jeursen will give the next lecture in the Concerning War and Conflict Series. In ‘Ecocide: The Case of Gaza’, Jeursen will explore the profound impact of war in Gaza on local ecologies and its far-reaching consequences.

Ecological violence in modern warfare

Jeursen will analyse how the destruction of ecosystems exacerbates humanitarian crises and undermines future sustainability. He will complement legal and criminological perspectives on ecocide with a conflict studies approach, examining ecological violence as an intrinsic element of modern warfare. A focus on the environmental dimensions of violence in Gaza highlights the urgent need for holistic strategies to recognise, monitor, and address an unaccounted casualty of war.

Concerning War and Conflict Lecture Series

In this first edition of the Concerning War and Conflict lecture series, scholars from the field of Conflict Studies look at the case of Gaza through their particular analytical lenses. The aim is to provide analytical tools and share knowledge to support and inspire a broader audience of Utrecht University staff, students, and the general public to make sense of this case.

The series is open to all. We strive to create an inclusive and constructive learning environment. For this reason, all those attending are required to respect the rules of the collective, which means that any form of hate speech, intimidation, and harassment are not welcome.
