Lecture Miguel Ángel del Arco Blanco: Victory and death in Franco's post-war Spain
Political History
On Tuesday 17 March, Miguel Ángel del Arco Blanco (University of Granada) will give the next lecture in Political History. In ‘The Spanish Famine: victory and death in Franco's postwar Spain’, Del Arco Blanco situates the Spanish famine of the 1940s within the broader history of contemporary European famines.
The Spanish famine
Del Arco Blanco argues that the Spanish famine should be understood not as an anomaly, but as part of a continental landscape shaped by war, authoritarianism, and post-war reconstruction. While sharing features with other European experiences of scarcity, the Spanish case was distinguished by the victorious imposition of a new political order that transformed hunger into a tool of repression.
This lecture is jointly organised with the project Politics of Environmental Action, supported by Pathways to Sustainability, and initiated by Roberta Biasillo.
