Lecture Jad Melki: Media Literacy of Genocide, War and Colonialism

On Monday 31 August, Professor of Journalism and Media Studies Jad Melki (Lebanese American University) will give a lecture and a masterclass. Melki will present an alternative approach to media literacy, one built for communities that mainstream frameworks tend to overlook.

Rethinking media literacy

Most media literacy training is built for the Global North. Melki offers an alternative, designed for communities it leaves out, especially in the Global South and other postcolonial contexts. Rather than importing Western models, he starts from local priorities and history, centring resistance to oppression.

The lecture will be followed by a masterclass for RMa students and PhD candidates, where the concept of ‘media literacy of the oppressed’ will be discussed.
