On Tuesday 15 October, Iva Vukušić, Assistant Professor in International History and genocide researcher, will give the next lecture in the Concerning War and Conflict Lecture Series. In ‘Judicial Responses to Mass Violence: The Case of Israel and Palestine’, Vukušić will address how judicial institutions – primarily the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice – responded to the past year’s events and critically examine what is reasonable to expect from them.

Much debate since 7 October 2023, has centered around terms like ‘genocide’, which have a precise legal meaning. Moreover, diplomatic and political tensions, and even outrage, are being generated by actions (not) taken by judicial institutions in The Hague when addressing the situation in Israel and Palestine. Vukušić’s lecture will offer a timely exploration of these critical issues, shedding light on the complex role of judicial institutions in addressing mass violence amidst escalating tensions.

Concerning War and Conflict Lecture Series

In this first edition of the Concerning War and Conflict lecture series, scholars from the field of Conflict Studies look at the case of Gaza through their particular analytical lenses. The aim is to provide analytical tools and share knowledge to support and inspire a broader audience of Utrecht University staff, students, and the general public to make sense of this case.

The series is open to all. We strive to create an inclusive and constructive learning environment. For this reason, all those attending are required to respect the rules of the collective, which means that any form of hate speech, intimidation, and harassment are not welcome.
