What does broad prosperity mean in a time of significant societal transitions? And how can we leverage the various dimensions of broad prosperity to shape these changes? On Tuesday 15 April 2025, at the Railway Museum in Utrecht, we will bring together scientists and various societal stakeholders to explore these questions.

Broad prosperity provides a framework that is increasingly being used to assess developments, for instance by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. Broad prosperity goes beyond economic growth and encompasses multiple dimensions of well-being and prosperity, including sustainability, health, safety, social cohesion, and democratic stability.

This conference offers a unique opportunity to discover how this interdisciplinary framework can be applied to urgent societal challenges requiring transitions, such as sustainability, digitalisation, democracy and demographics, healthcare, and the labour market.
Programme
The afternoon begins with an inspiring keynote by Kim Putters, director of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER) and University Professor of Broad Prosperity at Tilburg University. Following this opening session, you can participate in two rounds in an interactive sessions on transitions related to sustainability, digitalisation/AI, demographics/health, and democracy. Speakers from academia and societal practice will engage in discussions about various dilemmas and trade-offs within the broad prosperity framework.

Moderator: Joyce Browne
Dr Joyce Browne is a medical doctor and epidemiologist at UMC Utrecht. Her work focuses on (among other topics) global maternal health research, health equity and equitable partnerships in global health and research capacity building in low- and middle-income countries; topics that tie in with the broad prosperity approach towards tackling societal challenges.
