Introduction to Python - September 2024

to

Python is a powerful programming language suitable for scientific computing and general-purpose programming. In this workshop, we aim to give you the tools to start exploring Python and all it has to offer for your research.

This one-day workshop will take you from the very basics of Python syntax to data handling and visualisation. In the first half of the workshop, you will become familiar with Python syntax and data types. Additionally, you will delve into programming techniques such as if statements, loops, and functions. In the second half of the workshop, you will learn to read, explore, and manipulate data using the ‘pandas’ library. Finally, you will explore the basics of data visualisation using the ‘matplotlib’ library.

Note that the workshop focuses on the fundamentals of working with Python and data, it will not cover statistical analyses in Python.

During the workshop, we will use Jupyter Notebooks to work with Python. By the end of the workshop, you will be sufficiently familiar with Python to start handling your own data in a clean, robust, and reproducible manner.

Prerequisites

  • You do not need any prior experience with Python or programming. The workshop is suitable for beginners.
  • The workshop is open to participants from Utrecht University (UU) and UU-affiliated organisations (for example, UMC Utrecht) only.
