As of 1 January 2016, the Executive Board has appointed Wolfgang Eichhammer Professor of Energy Efficiency and Energy System Modelling in the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University.
Eichhammer intends to accept his position with an inaugural address entitled 'Energy Systems Modelling and Energy Policy - How good is the marriage between science and policy?'
Energy system modelling is a science; however, it takes place in a public space which is highly influenced by the interests but also limited knowledge of involved stakeholders from politics and the private sector. Policy makers establish long and short-term targets for the transformation of the energy system and are interested to know how to reach them. Scientists are supposed to provide independent answers but are continuously subject to influence from the policy levels when results do not correspond with normative thinking of policy makers. In that context, the Oratie investigates the relationship between science and policy making and debates the independence of science in the specific field of energy system modelling.
The Utrecht University Executive Board is pleased to invite all interested parties to attend the ceremony. Following the address, a reception will be held in the Senate Hall.
