Impact Night 2024: Human rights, for present and future generations – taking responsibility for a safe and healthy living environment

In the present time, many people worldwide and close to home experience inequality, insecurity and other forms of injustice. How do we ensure together that we and future generations can continue to live in a world where human rights are paramount? And how do we together take responsibility for a safe and healthy living environment and an inclusive city? On 10 December 2024, Human Rights Day, we – the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance of Utrecht University together with the City of Utrecht – cordially invite all UU employees, students, alumni, and representatives of civil society organisations to reflect on human rights – worldwide, but also close to home.

We would like to discuss topics that affect us, and just as importantly, future generations, on a daily basis. In the programme, we pay attention to various aspects of this theme. You can meet during various theme sessions to share knowledge and gain new insights. It promises to be a varied, interactive and inspiring evening.

Note for non-Dutch speakers

Most of the programme (listed below) will be held in Dutch, with the exception of two thematic sessions: The price of water safety and Making the Netherlands climate proof: the role of the government and the financial sector.

About the location

The location of this evening's event has added significance because it will be exactly 400 years since the financing of the repair of the Lekdijk was signed in this building – Janskerkhof 3 – by issuing a perpetual bond. In 1624, the Lekdijk broke through. This caused the entire area from Utrecht to Rotterdam to flood. Flood protection is highly topical. In one of the sessions, we address the issue of water safety and how it touches on the right to life and a sustainable living environment.
