On 21 September, IMPAKT, a centre for media culture, will organise the event How to stay human in the digital age in collaboration with TivoliVredenburg, the Centre for the Humanities and the Urban Interfaces Research Group.

In his latest book Team Human (2019), American media theorist Douglas Rushkoff sheds light on the digital age in 100 statements. How do we preserve our humanity in a world of social media, algorithms and robots?

Anti-human agenda

We once thought that technology, the free market and the internet would connect us. In 2019, these institutions seem to isolate us and disperse us, Rushkoff says. Sometimes they even seem to follow an anti-human agenda. In Team Human, Rushkoff exposes how social media influence our political preference, algorithms direct our choices and robots take over our jobs.

But it's not too late! Rushkoff encourages us to join Team Human. With the help of biology, psychology and human evolution, he shows that by uniting and working together, people can defuse the evil forces of technology and build a more connected world.
