American counterterrorism expert Anne Speckhard will speak at Utrecht University on June 20. She is a psychologist and an expert in the field of counter-messaging. Currently, she is working on a project that includes movie clips with former radical figures, aimed at a potentially pro-ISIS audience.
The event is organised by the U.S. Embassy, Dare to be Grey and the department History of International Relations.
Anne Speckhard, Ph.D. is an adjunct associate professor of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine at Georgetown University, and is the director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism (ICSVE). Speckhard has been working in the field of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since the 1980’s, and has extensive experience working in Europe, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union. In 2015, Speckhard formed the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism, a nonprofit research org, and started the Breaking the ISIS Brand -- the ISIS Defectors Interviews Project. Since then ICSVE has interviewed via video 49 ISIS defectors/returnees and prisoners from Syria, Iraq, Western Europe, Central Asia and the Balkans. They have also interviewed 12 European parents of those who joined ISIS, and two terrorist ideologues. See also the video on Youtube.
