On Monday 19 March Prof. Paul Cliteur will give a talk on the religious aspect of contemporary terrorism. In his recently published book 'In naam van God' (In the name of God) he states that the sort of terrorism we are confronted with nowadays is religious in nature. He explains that this sort of terrorism, what he calls theoterrorism, requires a different view and approach than previous forms of terrorism.
During his talk he will elaborate on this hypothesis and emphasize the need for a paradigm shift in counterterrorism. This shift seems to have taken place recently. Political leaders Donald Trump (USA) and Emmanuel Macron (France) openly talk about the religious nature of the new terrorist challenge. But will this lead to a new, more promising approach to terrorism?
Come and find out on the 19th! There will be plenty of room for debate with the audience. From 21:30 - 22:00 free drinks will be served. This talk is part of the Geohouse Debate Series of the Geoscience Faculty, organized together with students of the Geosciences Honours College. Admittance is free for all. If you have any questions about this event, please contact dr. Floris van den Berg: F.vandenBerg2@uu.nl.
Paul Cliteur is legal and philosophy expert and professor of Jurisprudence at Leiden University.
