GDS webinar: Catalina Goanta on "Human ads: Social media monetisation and consumer protection"

They have each invited a leading expert in their research field to enlighten us about the different aspects of governing the digital society. Catalina Goanta on Human Ads
Stefan Kulk, coordinator of the SIG "Future-proof and responsible regulation of the platform society", will kick off the webinar series on 29 September, from 12:00 to 13:00. He has invited Catalina Goanta, Assistant Professor in Private Law at Maastricht University. She will share her thoughts on “'Human ads: Social media monetisation and consumer protection”.
About Catalina Goanta
Next to her position at Maastricht University, Goanta is postdoctoral researcher at Studio Europa (Maastricht Working on Europe) and she manages the Maastricht Law and Tech Lab together with Gijs van Dijck and Marcel Schaper, which is a unique research group with seven computer scientists in residence at a law school.
One of the main themes of her research is content/web monetization and social media governance. The Internet is helping regular users make money in ways that did not exist 10 years ago, such as influencer marketing or ad revenue. In this context, she uses doctrinal legal methods to critically reflect on existing and desirable regulatory frameworks surrounding online harms (e.g. content moderation; platform discretion; misleading advertising). To bring together complementing disciplines contributing to this field, she also established and coordinate, with Jerry Spanakis, the Computational Social Media research group.
Governing the Digital Society
This webinar series is organized by the Utrecht University focus area Governing the Digital Society. Governing the Digital Society promotes research on the social processes of datafication, algorithmisation and platformisation. The focus area's basic research inquiry revolves around the question: How to develop and apply principles of (good) governance in digital societies?
