Forum Descartes

The "Forum Descartes" was initially set up so that American PhD students from Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Michigan and Wisconsin coming to France could meet their French peers. In the course of the years, the Forum also came to involve PhD students and postdocs from several other destinations, including The Netherlands. The format has for years now been the same: in total, 20 PhD candidates and postdocs present their work in 20-minute lectures, further 20 PhD candidates and postdocs subsequently provide a comment of 15 minutes. After that, the public may join the discussion. Each year, one morning session is always dedicated to the discussion, among experts, of one new groundbreaking monograph and one important new text edition.

In the ample breaks and the joint luncheons and dinners, junior colleagues and their supervisors get the chance to meet each other, create networks and make friends.

Organizing team

The “Forum Descartes” has been hosted at Paris for the last few editions; this time it moves to the Netherlands, with the "Center for the History of Philosophy and Science" of Radboud University, Nijmegen, being responsible for the programme and contents of this meeting. The event at Utrecht is co-organized and co-funded by the Descartes Centre, the Centre for the History of Philosophy and Science at Nijmegen, Radboud University, Princeton University and the Dutch Research School for Philosophy.
