Farewell lecture Chris Backes: Environmental Law Protecting Planetary and Ecological Boundaries

On Wednesday 24 June, Chris Backes will deliver his farewell lecture as Professor of Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (School of Law, Institute for Jurisprudence, Constitutional and Administrative Law). The title of his lecture is ‘Environmental Law Protecting Planetary and Ecological Boundaries’.

Chris Backes obtained his PhD in 1993 from Utrecht University with a thesis entitled ‘Legal Protection of Ecologically Valuable Areas’. He subsequently served as an associate professor there for some time, until he was appointed Professor of Environmental Law in 1997. He then delivered his inaugural lecture, entitled ‘Sustainable Growth?’. From 2007 to 2016, he was Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at Maastricht University. Since 2016, he has returned to Utrecht as Professor of Environmental Law, at the School of Law (Jurisprudence, Constitutional and Administrative Law) and the Utrecht Centre for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law (UCWOSL). His inaugural lecture (his second in Utrecht) was on ‘Law for a circular economy’.
