Faculty Club: Beatrice de Graaf - Security in a changing world order (fully booked)

During this meeting, Beatrice de Graaf will discuss the complex triangle between Europe, the United States and the UN. How are defence matters regulated? How do we mobilise our armed forces? And how do we ensure that citizens feel safe?

Historical examples of mobilisation, civil protection and conscription form the basis for her analysis of the current challenges of international cooperation. Together, we will explore the role of institutions and examine how resilient the Netherlands and Europe are today.

The conversation will be moderated by Daan Sanders, PhD researcher in defence policy and deterrence during the Cold War, affiliated with Utrecht University and the Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH).

About the speaker

Prof. Beatrice de Graaf is a historian and researcher in the field of security, crisis and terrorism. She investigates how states and societies attempt to maintain a high level of security and how these attempts relate to core values and institutions such as democracy, freedom and the rule of law. Her research covers the period from the 19th century to the present day and looks at moments when the effectiveness and legitimacy of security measures were at stake.

During the evening, there will be ample opportunity to engage in conversation with the speakers and other attendees. The Faculty Club offers a setting where meeting, deepening and reflection come together.
