Professor Vivien A. Schmidt will be visiting Utrecht University as an visiting fellow of the strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies (IOS). Schmidt has contributed in an important way to the study of institutions and institutional change by introducing what she has dubbed the “fourth institutionalism,” that of discursive institutionalism. Ideas and discourse, Professor Schmidt has argued consistently, should be taken seriously if we want to understand policy change. This expert meeting led by Professor Ido de Haan offers a unique opportunity to learn more about Professor Schmidt’s work and to exchange views with her on the implications of her approach to study policy change.
Professor Vivien A. Schmidt is Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration, Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University, and Founding Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Europe. Her research focuses on European political economy, institutions, democracy, and political theory. Professor Schmidt is a prominent contributor to debates about the current legitimacy crisis of the European Union and well known for her work on institutions and institutional change and her approach of discursive institutionalism.
