On 10 April the Expert Meeting from the research project Beyond ‘Religion vs Emancipation': Gender and Sexuality in Women’s Conversion to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in Contemporary Western Europe, lead by Prof. Dr. Anne-Marie Korte (Religious Studies), will take place. In the evening the documentary screening of Utrecht University alumna Janina Pigaht’s Delfts Blauw Meets Hijab will take place at the Louis Hartlooper Complex in Utrecht.
The aim of the project is to study women’s conversion processes, in which gender and sexuality play a formative role and new religious subjectivities are acquired. While it is often assumed that religion and women’s emancipation are fundamentally conflicting, this project challenges that conception, and through a comparative research contributes to academic and public understandings of tensions between religious and secular gender discourses.
The day program (14.00-17.00) will consist of keynote lectures by Miranda Klaver (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Vanessa Vroon-Najem (University of Amsterdam) and our international guest Karen Skinazi (University of Bristol).
