Expert Meeting: Choosing the Bench – Selection and Standards in International Adjudication
Upcoming judicial elections in 2026 across several major international courts, including the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, bring renewed attention to nomination and voting practices, evaluation criteria, and institutional expectations placed upon candidates. This Expert Meeting at Utrecht University seeks to use the convergence of institutional moments as an opportunity to examine these procedures and practices in an interdisciplinary manner, starting from Article 2 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice.
The event will take the form of a small, discussion-oriented expert meeting hosted at Utrecht University, invitation-based and with hybrid participation.
Participants will circulate draft papers in advance so that sessions can prioritise in depth commentary and discussion rather than formal presentations. Participation will primarily be in person, with limited hybrid options available. All attendees will need to fund their own travel and accommodation.
