Descartes Centre Colloquium on the image of the university
The image of the university and pictures of (and in) the university
In this colloquium, we want to address the image of the university, in the double sense of this phrase: images and pictures that are used for, or within, the university; and the way how we/the university wants to develop and propagate and image of itself. We will combine a number of brief presentations with discussion and group work – so please bring your own favourite pictures of the university to this meeting! In this way, we can combine aspects of the university’s material culture (we could also discuss your favourite hoodie or university mug!) with the more ideas-centered and impact-related question of the perception of the university (and, of course, this will also relate to the understanding of what ‘the university’ is, can, or should be).
Presentations will include:
Susanna Bloem (Open Science; project “Tussentijd”) on visual-symbolic representations of key values of the university. More information: Tussentijd | Universiteit Utrecht (uu.nl)
Laura Mol (Centre for Science and Culture) on project “A word about tomorrow”. More information: A look at... A word about tomorrow - Public engagement at Utrecht University - Utrecht University (uu.nl)
Mette Bruinsma (department History/Art History: Cultural History, University History) on “Students’ image of ‘the university’: central stage or background noise in student life?“
Paul Ziche (director Descartes Centre, department Philosophy and Religious Studies) on the way how the UU captures its own image in photographs
