Title: Bee inspired: honeycombs on the atomic scale
Abstract: I will talk about artificial lattices made and measured in a scanning tunneling microscope. Honeycomb lattices such as graphene have many fascinating properties including Dirac cones in their band structure. My talk will focus on the separation of s and p orbital bands in the band structure of the honeycomb lattice which is not trivial considering (e.g.) graphene has a strong s-p hybridization. I will show the techniques used and the rationale behind the artificial lattices and explain how we managed to see separated flat bands and Dirac cones.
