In total, around fifty researchers and activists from more than fifteen countries will take stock of the 'affective turn' in literary theory and cultural sciences in both the English and Spanish-speaking regions, from the Spinozian way of thinking to the social-psychological analyses of emotions. The congress specifically focuses on the relationship between the affective register and the representation of violence in Latin American culture (from state to street violence, from physical to symbolic violence). Special attention is paid to the performative and affective power of certain narrative styles and genres (e.g. melodrama, magical realism, testimony literature, police novel) and media (film, theatre, literature, activism).

The keynote speakers are Jon Beasley-Murray (University of British Colombia, Vancouver), Nadia Lie (KU Leuven), Cecilia Macón (Universidad de Buenos Aires), Laura Podalsky (Ohio State University), Rossana Reguillo Cruz (ITESO, Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara), Ignacio Sánchez-Prado (Washington University in St. Petersburg). Louis) and Cecilia Sosa (Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, Buenos Aires).

The official language of the congress is Spanish. The full program is (in Spanish) available here. For more information, send an e-mail to
