From 12 to 14 November, the conference The Limits of Philosophy in the Roman Imperial Age will explore the boundaries of philosophy during the Roman Empire (27 BCE – 427 CE). Scholars will examine how conceptions of philosophy’s nature and scope interacted with other domains of knowledge and belief during this period.

Exploring intersections of philosophy

Where does philosophy end and religion begin? Where is the boundary between myth and philosophy? How does philosophy relate to the sciences – and to scepticism? These questions will guide discussions on the intersections between philosophy and science (medicine, astronomy), religion (early Christian thought), literature (mythology, narrative), and scepticism.
