Conference: Solidarity in the European Union

Invitation

We are pleased to invite you to the conference “Solidarity in the European Union”, which will take place on 27 June 2025 in Utrecht.

This one-day event brings together researchers, policymakers, and professionals from across Europe to reflect on the role of solidarity in the EU today. From migration and democracy to energy, social policy, and the Eurozone, the programme offers space for in-depth discussion on both challenges and opportunities. The conference features six thematic panels:

• Solidarity and Refugees – The refugee crisis, challenges in asylum and integration - Chair: Salvatore Nicolosi & Karin Geuijen
• Solidarity and Democracy – Citizen participation, human rights, and democratic governance. - Chair: Ekaterina Rashkova
• Solidarity in Energy Policy – EU’s energy policies, balancing national interests with collective goals, and transitioning to renewable sources. - Chair: Marloes Beers
• Solidarity and Nationalism – The tensions between rising nationalism and EU solidarity, and the impact on cohesion among member states. - Chair: Jan Pieter Beetz
• Solidarity in Social Policy – Social welfare, healthcare, education, and labor rights. - Chair: Sonja Bekker & Chantal Remery
• Solidarity in the European Monetary Union – Fiscal policies, financial solidarity, and economic stability. - Chair: Jacob Jordaan, Martijn Huysmans & Ton van den Brink

We are also delighted to welcome Juri Viehoff as keynote speaker. His work on justice, solidarity, and European integration will provide a compelling framework for the day.

The programme includes a poster presentation by Master’s students, as well as a closing reception with live Spanish music. Lunch and drinks will be provided free of charge.
