CCSS MasterClass on Complex Spatial Networks in Biology and Beyond: Part III
Due to the possible strike of the public transportation, the third lecture will start from 11:00 instead of 10:00.
The CCSS MasterClass is a series of lectures on a specific topic of Complexity Science given by a leading expert in the field, which is generously supported by one of our UU alumni Laurens Gaarenstroom.
MasterClass Overview
General Title: Complex Spatial Networks in Biology and Beyond.
Part I on Monday November 11 (10:00-15:00 with lunch): Characterizing Complex Spatial Networks
Part II on Tuesday November 12 (10:00-15:00 with lunch): Flow, Distribution, and Adaptation in Complex Spatial Networks
Part III on Wednesday November 13 (11:00-16:00 with lunch): Mechanics and Shaping of Complex Spatial Networks
Speaker Overview
Dr. Carl Modes is a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) and at the Center for Systems Biology Dresden (CSBD). His group seeks to leverage principles and methods of applied topology and geometry in order to better understand complex biological phenomena, with particular interest in the role of network complexity and the shape-organizing power of topological defects in such systems. Carl obtained his PhD in Soft Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Theory of Condensed Matter Group at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, as well as, at the Center for Studies in Physics and Biology at the Rockefeller University. Last March, Carl received the highly prestigious and competitive International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) Program Grant Award, together with two international collaborators, to continue his work on understanding the regeneration of jellyfish.
