On 14 December, the Gender, Diversity & Global Justice Platform organises the next Brown Bag Lunch Conversation titled ‘Minority & Diversity Voices of the Middle East’.

Raising one’s voice

The afternoon starts with a talk by Marlene Schäfers (Cultural Anthropology), who will critically look at what raising one’s voice entails on a variety of levels. In Turkey, recent decades have seen Kurdish voices gain increasing moral and political value as metaphors of representation and resistance. Women’s voices are understood as potent means to withstand patriarchal restrictions and political oppression.

This presentation will be followed by Pooyan Tamimi Arab, who will delve into the secularisation in Iran, and, in particular, look at the meaning of the act of burning the hijab, as many protestors in Iran did or supported doing.
